What Am I Not Allowed to Throw in the Dumpster?
Even though we accept a variety of materials in our roll off dumpsters, there are some items that we absolutely cannot accept. This includes any flammable, toxic or hazardous materials. We are an environmentally friendly company and we try our best to keep landfills free of items that can cause harm to the environment.
Common items people want to throw in dumpsters are tires, batteries, tree stumps, railroad ties and paints. These items, however, we cannot accept. Tires can cause harm in landfills by rising to the top of landfills and breaking plastic liners and ventilation pipes in the process. We do not accept car batteries because of their high level of lead and other metals that cannot be mixed with other materials. Tree stumps are also prohibited from landfills because of their bulkiness and potential damage to landfill liners. People often use railroad ties for landscaping purposes, however, we cannot accept them either. They contain a substance derived from pitch tar than can be harmful if handled improperly. We do accept paint as long as it is dry. We do not accept wet paint due to its lead and mercury content.
Just because you can’t throw your hazardous waste in our roll off dumpsters doesn’t mean there isn’t a way to properly dispose of it. In Buncombe County there are plenty of ways to dispose of your household hazardous waste items. The county accepts a wide variety of items that they will gladly take off your hands. It is worth the drop off just for saving our environment!
